A Good Start for New Little Citizens
When a baby announces its arrival, the new parents have their hands full with work. Not only with caring for the wellbeing of the new family member, but also with various documents and obligations – what are all the things you must do, to ensure that the start of your baby’s life is really good? Citypilot will help you with all these tasks!
It takes 9 months before a baby comes into the world. Although you have bought and organised many things in advance, after the birth many important issues, which should definitely not be overlooked, await you as well:
- Obtain the child’s Birth Certificate
- Insure the new-born baby
- Apply for a Birth Grant
- Arrange the first appointment with a Paediatrician
- Apply for Maternity financial support
- Apply for a Parental Allowance
- Apply for a Child Passport
And this is how you manage everything easily:
Where do you obtain the child’s Birth Certificate?
You will receive your baby’s Birth Certificate at the Registry Office in the district where your baby was born. The hospital automatically informs the Office about the birth and notifies the parents of the address at which they can collect the Birth Certificate in the days immediately after discharge from hospital.

How can you report the newborn to a Health Insurance company?
In general, a new-born baby has the same insurance company as its mother. However, according to the law, you must confirm or change the registration within eight workdays. The father may also report the registration, but he will need the ID of the mother and Birth Certificate of the baby.
Foreigners with Permanent Residence may also conclude a contractual health insurance for their baby.

How can you apply for a Birth Grant?
The Czech State pays a Birth Grant to new parents – it is a one-time amount of CZK 13,000 which is intended to help the family in the beginning with the financial expenses of the child. This amount is granted to every mother, regardless of her income. The only condition is that she must have Permanent Residence in the Czech Republic. This amount is also paid to foreigners from the EU, for whom it is not necessary to have Permanent Residence, but a valid work contract with a Czech company or confirmation of the receipt of unemployment benefits.
The Birth Grant is paid by individual offices of the State social assistance at Labour Offices – a list of contact spots in Prague is to be found here!
When applying for a Birth Grant, you need to present the following documents:
- ID of the mother
- Birth Certificate of the baby

Your first visit to the Paediatrician
It is necessary to choose a Paediatrician in advance, before the birth. Tip: Call the chosen medical office and arrange for the registration of your baby even before its birth. Besides trust in the doctor, other important factors include the proximity to your residence and easy accessibility. It is very unpleasant to travel with an ill baby across half of Prague. Some doctors are even used to visiting their little patients after hours, so it is practical to live in the same part of the city. Do not forget that the first visit must be within three days of discharge from hospital, at the latest.
